Northwest fires bring smoky skies to southern Clark County, northern Mohave County

Fires in the Columbia River Gorge and northwest Washington are pumping smoke into Southwest Washington and Oregon

Air quality is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups in some areas

Fires burning in the Columbia River Gorge and northwest Washington are sending smoke to southern Clark County and northern Mohave County.

The Clark County Clean Air Agency issued an advisory Saturday afternoon warning of unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

The Mohave County Department of Public Health issued a similar advisory Friday night, warning of hazardous air quality in some areas.

The smoke is expected to persist for the next several days, according to the National Weather Service.

People in affected areas should take the following precautions:

* Stay indoors as much as possible. * Keep windows and doors closed. * Run an air purifier if you have one. * Avoid strenuous activity outdoors. * If you must go outdoors, wear a mask or respirator.

The health effects of smoke inhalation can include:

* Eye irritation * Sore throat * Coughing * Difficulty breathing * Nausea * Headache
